Hiring a vehicle

If you choose to hire a vehicle abroad, book in advance with a reputable firm.

Booking in advance will allow you the time to fully understand the terms and conditions of the agreement, the level of insurance cover, and any additional charges that might be incurred.

The hire company abroad may ask for a ‘check code’ so they can view your driving licence. You can find out how to get this code at www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

As when driving your own vehicle, it’s vital that you understand the rules of the road and have all the necessary documentation for the areas you’re visiting.

When you receive your vehicle, make sure that

  • you’re familiar with the controls, and that the vehicle has any essential equipment for the country you’re in
  • any existing damage on the vehicle is noted
  • you understand what the fuel requirements are (normally you’ll be required to return the vehicle with either a full or empty tank – failure to comply with the specific requirements can be costly)
  • you have the rental agreements in writing
  • you’re provided with information on what you need to do in the event of a breakdown or an incident.
