If you intend to drive your own vehicle abroad, have it thoroughly checked and serviced. Checks include the spare tyre (make sure it’s in good condition), your tool kit and jack (make sure all items are complete and in working order).
Also make sure you have your spare car keys.
Your lights may need to be altered for driving on the right. Deflectors are required in some countries. These prevent your dipped beam from dazzling drivers approaching on the left. Yellow-tinted headlights are no longer required in most countries. Always carry a set of replacement bulbs and fuses.
Check your mirrors. You must have clear all-round vision. You’ll need to have exterior rear-view mirrors, especially on the left, for driving on the right-hand side of the road.
If you’re towing a caravan or trailer, make sure you can see clearly behind you, down both sides of the combination.
Check seat belts and child restraints, including booster seats. Make sure that the fittings are secure and that the belts and restraints are functioning correctly.
Dealing with breakdowns abroad can be especially time-consuming and worrying without the help of one of the motoring organisations or breakdown services.
The best prevention is to have your car thoroughly serviced before you leave and to make regular checks along the way. Make sure you’re prepared for minor breakdowns.
You must have all the necessary documents before leaving. Again, the
motoring organisations will be able to tell you what’s required for each country.
