Northampton Theory Test Centre Directions

The venue is on the first floor of Charles House, within the West Suite. The site is signposted well on arrival and is a large office-style building with a blue doorway.

Car

The test venue is based within Charles House, which sits on Derngate in the town centre of Northampton. The town can be accessed via the M1, which passes through just south of Northampton. Please note that there is limited on-street parking on Derngate, and therefore there is no guarantee that you’ll be able to park here on test day. We’ve provided an alternative site below, which is just around the corner from Charles House.

Hazelwood Road Car Park

This car park is open 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. Parking charges are as follows:

  • 2 hours = £2
  • 3 hours = £2.50
  • 4 hours = £3.50

Please note there is a maximum spend cap in operation at this site of £6.50. Therefore, if you’re planning to extend your stay in Northampton beyond your test, you will not be charged more than this amount. Specific tickets are available for both evening and overnight parking should you need them.

More information ▼

Parking can be paid for using either cash or the ‘Parkonomy’ service line. To pay using this platform, please call 0333 313 0000, and quote Location ID, 8549.

As mentioned, this car park is just around the corner from the venue. Head south on Hazelwood Road, and then turn right onto Derngate. The test venue will be on your right-hand side.

Bus

There are numerous bus routes that service Northampton town centre. We’ve selected four transit lines that head into the town from different directions. Hopefully, one of these routes will complement your personal journey to the test centre. If not, please visit the following ‘Moovit’ page to review other options (this page will reference ’78 Derngate’, but please be aware that the test site is located in numbers 61-68, as per the address details at the bottom of this guide).

  • 16: The number 16 heads westwards towards Northampton city centre, and starts in Ecton Brook. If using this service, please exit at Northampton Bus Interchange, where this bus terminates. To access the venue from here, please head south-east through the town centre, advancing beyond Mercer’s Row and Wood Hill, onto St. Giles Square. Continue east as St. Giles Square merges with Derngate, and follow the road through to the test site.
  • 87: This service starts in Towcester, travelling north to Northampton city centre. Please leave the bus at St. Peter’s Walk and head east, following the road until it merges into Derngate. Advance until you arrive at the venue, which will be situated on your left-hand side.
  • D3: The D3 approaches Northampton from the west. Please exit at St. Peter’s Walk, and follow the instructions listed above.
  • X10: This route starts in Kettering to the north of Northampton, and terminates at Northampton Bus Interchange, which is where you should leave this service. Please refer back to the onwards travel guidance noted in the number 16 bus commentary.

Train

Northampton Train Station is located just over a kilometre away from Charles House. Please note that there are no connecting bus services that will take you close to the centre. On foot, the route should take around sixteen minutes. If using public transport, you would still need to walk for about 10 minutes. Therefore, we recommend that you walk directly to the test venue from the station.

The route is relatively straightforward, involving a long, eastbound walk. After you’ve progressed beyond, Mare Fair, you’ll converge with the journey from St. Peter’s Walk bus stop. Therefore, please once head back to the travel guidance listed in the bus section notes.
