Glasgow Theory Test Centre Directions

The testing area is positioned on the third floor of the building. Please note that Empire House is well sign-posted on approach, and located within a busy shopping district.

Car

Glasgow is accessible via the M8 from the east and west, and the M74/77 from the south. The test venue is based at Empire House on West Nile Street, just to the north of the city centre. Given the test site’s proximity to central Glasgow, there are plenty of parking facilities available. We’ve selected two local options which might be of use.

Concert Square Car Park

This large, multi-story car park is located just 300m north of the venue. The site is open 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. Parking charges differ between Monday-Saturday and Sunday, but please be aware that the test centre does not open on a Sunday.

Prices to park per hour are as follows:

  • 1 hour = £2.80
  • 2 hours = £6.00
  • 3 hours = £9.00

Fees continue to rise by £3 for each additional hour parked. However given how close the test centre is to this car park, it’s unlikely that you’ll need more time than that shown above. Please note that if you’re planning to extend your stay in Glasgow beyond test day, there are overnight tickets available. These cost £4, and cover hours parked between 6.00pm and 8.00am.

All payment types are accepted at this car park. Disabled parking is accommodated, and electronic vehicle charging facilities are in operation.

To reach Empire House from this location, please exit the car park by turning left onto Cowcadden’s Road. Continue on, and then turn left again onto West Nile Street. Head southbound until you reach the venue, which will be positioned on your right-hand side. This journey should take no longer than five minutes by foot.

Buchannan Street Car Park

This site is open between 7.00am-9.00pm, Monday-Saturday (and 9.00am-9.00pm on Sundays). Parking is slightly cheaper here, and follows the following price structure:

  • 1 hour = £2.00
  • 2 hours = £3.80
  • 3 hours = £5.00

Charges gradually increase for additional time used. However, again, as this site is close to the venue, three hours should be more than enough time to travel to the test centre, take your test, and return to your vehicle. Please note that there is an evening park ticket available, priced at £2.00 (arrive after 5pm, exit before 8pm). This may come in useful, as the test site is operational until 8pm between Monday and Thursday.

West Nile Street is a short, 300m journey from Buchannan Street Car Park. Exit the car park and turn right, advancing on Bath Street until you approach the West Nile Street junction. Turn right, and progress for approximately 50m, the venue will be on your left-hand side.

Bus

There are various bus routes that visit scheduled stops nearby the test venue. We’ve selected three key services which enter the city from various directions; hopefully, at least one of these will be applicable for your personal journey.

  • 1D: This service travels between Glasgow city centre and Mountblow in northwest/southeast directions. Please exit at Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art; the test centre is roughly a ten-minute walk from here. Head north on Queen Street, then west onto St. Vincent Place. Progress, and then turn right onto West Vine Street. After advancing for approximately 400m, the venue will be on your left-hand side.
  • 3: The number 3 route heads between Nielston in the southwest suburbs of Glasgow, and the city centre to its northeast. If using this service, please leave the bus at West George Lane bus stop. Head north onto West George Street, and then walk eastbound until the West Nile Street junction. Turn left, and venture on to test centre.
  • X19: This transit line connects the city’s eastern and western suburbs, cutting across the centre of Glasgow in the process. This route directly heads towards West Nile Street, and the closest scheduled stop is just a two-minute walk from the venue. After arriving onto West Regent Street, simply turn left onto West Nile Street, and progress northbound for 150m to reach the test centre.

As mentioned, there are multiple services heading into Glasgow city centre which will facilitate reasonable onward travel to the test centre. To discover these, please visit the relevant ‘Moovit’ page, located here.

Train

There are two local stations within walking distance of the venue. Glasgow Queen Street welcomes services from across Scotland, and is positioned around 500m away from Empire House. Glasgow Central Station is slightly further away, but offers direct travel to a host of major UK train stations. Therefore, arrival into either of these stations will facilitate reasonable onwards travel to the test site.

If heading to West Nile Street from Glasgow Queen Street, exit the station by heading west on Dundas Lane. Turn right to head north on Buchannan Street, before turning left onto Bath Street. Advance for around 100m, and then turn right onto West Nile Street. The venue will be approximately 50m up on your left-hand side.

The journey from Glasgow Central Station will take just a few minutes longer. Head north in Union Street, then east on Gordon Street. Turn left, and you’ll find yourself at the south end of West Nile Street. Continue northbound for around 450m, again locating the test centre on your left-hand side.
