Driving in Europe

It can take you time to adjust to driving on the right, especially if you’re in a right-hand-drive car.

REMEMBER, hire vehicles will normally be left-hand drive. These may feel unfamiliar at first. Make sure you understand the controls before you drive.

Get into the habit of using all your mirrors before making any manoeuvre. This is particularly important before deciding to overtake. Remember to check the left exterior mirror. Don’t attempt to overtake until you’re used to driving on the right.

Don’t let your attention wander. It can be dangerous to forget where you are, even for a moment.

  • Each time you set out, remember that you’re in a foreign country where you must drive on the right.
  • Take special care when you have to drive on the road again after a rest.

Avoid driving for long periods and don’t drive when you’re tired.

Take extra care at roundabouts. Be aware of the possibility of changed priority.

Make sure that you know the rules of the road; for example, in some countries you can turn right, with caution, at an amber filter light.

Each time you move away, remember on which side of the road traffic will be approaching.

Motorway tolls

Find out about these. Include them in your budget and make sure that you carry an accepted method of payment. Frequent travellers may want to find out about the automated payment systems that are available in some countries.
